Eckerd Short-Term Juvenile Justice Residential (Male)

Overview

Eckerd’s new short-term juvenile justice residential service is a complete rehabilitative experience delivered in an average of 90 days to 48 adjudicated male youth at two residential sites, ages 13 to 17, as referred by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Division of Juvenile Justice. This exciting, new residential treatment concept

combines promising and evidence-based practices with a strong family transition component, and signifies a public-private partnership with the Division of Juvenile Justice which has produced an innovative shift in the way youth are served in North Carolina’s juvenile justice system. Intensive, short-term services include individualized treatment and academic plans that combine formal and experiential education, vocational education, community service, behavioral health, and family counseling in a non-punitive environment designed to address the youth’s behavioral

challenges through a strength-based approach. Youth also receive accredited education on-site and work together in small group settings with assigned counselors.

WestCare Short-Term Juvenile Justice Residential (Female)

Overview

WestCare North Carolina Girls Residential Program, located in Manson, North Carolina, is a gender responsive residential program for girls 13-17. This 16-bed residential program for girls, who are referred by the North Carolina Division of Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Prevention (DJJ), will be classified as Level 2 girls and must reside in the state of North Carolina. The average length of stay is 4-6 months.

The campus is on a beautiful mature wooded property surrounded on three sides by Kerr Lake. This program provides housing, substance abuse prevention services, education and independent living skills for girls who have behavioral and academic challenges and are in need of a supportive residential environment that is designed to address the special needs of young women.

The main goal of the program is to assist each young women to learn the skills and tools needed to successfully re-integrate back with their family and community. Family support services are also an integral component of the program. The campus provides a wealth of services, strengthening and broadening the behavior and education of the girls participating in the program. The program incorporates individual service plans that will guide the development of services based on the “girl’s stories” to facilitate social and emotional growth within each adolescent female we serve. We also have a Non Public Conventional Academy to meet all of our young women’s educational needs during their stay. Our facility also has a Registered Nurse and provides recreational programs and outdoor activities.

On site, residents will have available to them:

• Education – through our WestCare Girls Academy which provides an education aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study; exceptional children service are provided by a licensed special education teacher.

• Recreation – drama, art and creative expression
• Outdoor Activities – hiking, canoeing, biking, camping and a fully functioning ropes course

Methodist Home for Children operated Multipurpose Juvenile Homes

Overview
The Multipurpose Juvenile Home Program is designed to provide non-secure, long-term, residential care as an alternative to secure detention and Youth Development Centers. The Department contracts with a private provider to operate the program. The first six eight-bed facilities opened in 1993. A seventh home was opened in 2008.

The homes provide at least double staff coverage 24 hours a day plus a certified teacher and full-time family counselor for up to 240 days. Youths served are referred by the local juvenile court.
 
Program Organization
Multipurpose Juvenile Homes are located in Chowan, Craven, Hertford, Macon, Robeson, and Wayne counties. State management and oversight are provided by the Department of Public Safety Division of Juvenile Justice.
