Daily Uses of Math
Denise Chrisman, Amanda Quirk, Emily McWhirter

She hates math and is convinced she doesn't need it… Here is a simple activity to help her understand math is used daily. It will also provide her with a few examples of daily uses of math. Talk to her about why we need to be proficient at math. Emphasize her need to be able to protect herself and her money. Now, challenge her to complete her own list. Have her keep track of the times she uses math for a few days. When you review the list, and count the ways, remind her that you are again using math.

A few examples:

  • Cooking
  • Shopping
  • Budgeting money
  • Checking your paycheck - you need math to ensure they paid you for the hours you worked.
  • Paying your bills
  • Tipping in a restaurant
  • Mixing hair color
  • Scheduling your day
