Tips for Successful Study

Compiled by Denise Chrisman, Original Source Unknown

Listen

  • Concentrate on your teacher.
  • Tune out all other talking and noise.
  • Listen for the main ideas.
  • If you need a point repeated - ask the teacher.
  • Consider a tape recorder - to tape the lessons - if the teacher allows it.

Take notes

  • Focus on Whom? What? Where? When? And Why?
  • Write down most important points.
  • Record main ideas and facts.
  • Use YOUR words when taking notes.
  • Keep organized.

After School

  • If necessary, re-write your notes. Even if they are organized, re-writing them exposes
    you to the information again.
  • Highlight important notes.
  • Add explanations if you need to.

Your work place

  • Find a quiet space.
  • Keep it uncluttered.
  • Only one subject at a time on your desk.
  • Turn the TV off.

Review information

  • Try breaking it down into manageable pieces. Instead of trying to remember the entire
Civil War, break in down into specific battles or time periods
  • Review and re-write when memorizing dates, formulas etc. Don't get discouraged,
memorizing things takes practice and time.

Studying with others

  • Study information before quizzing each other. Guessing doesn't benefit either of you.
  • Ask each other questions.
  • If it is too distracting in a group environment, opt for alone time to study.

Before your test

  • Get a good night sleep. You'll do better rested than if you stay up all night cramming.
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Relax.
