Tim Brooks
Length: Approximately 30-60 minutes
Setting: One on one time with adolescent and counselor/mentor/parent
Supplies: comfortable shoes
Objective:
To help teen find alternative methods of feeling good about herself,
and to model healthy behavior that can foster self-confidence.
Activity: Find a local hiking trail in the community or county (this may require
a drive-if no access to car then walk along the most scenic route in
the area). Areas of discussion can include relating how being out in
nature is so different from being around a bunch of people. Which does
she like better, what does she like about being outside, what does she
like about being quiet in the woods?
Notes: This is primarily just an opportunity to get to spend time with the
teen, away from a bunch of other distractions and out of any type of
office setting. Also, Hiking and other physical activities can give
adolescents a feeling of accomplishment and higher self-image. A lot
of silence on this type of outing is perfectly normal and appropriate.
Let the young woman lead the way in conversation, and touch on the topics
above when they fit naturally into conversation. Don't force the issues.
