The Blind Polygon

Michelle Zechmann

For groups of 5 - 100 people.

You will need a rope long enough for everyone to hold in a circle and blindfolds for all.

  • Have everyone stand in a circle holding the rope waist-high - with the rope in front of him or her. Put blindfolds on everyone.

  • Tell the group (once all blindfolded) that they must make the shape of a square (or triangle, or polygon or whatever sided shape you prefer) - without looking.

  • Give no other instructions other than the group cannot remove the blindfolds to look at their shape until the whole group has agreed that they have accomplished the task.

De-brief:

Ask: Who was a leader and who was a follower? Talk about those leaders and how everyone has a time and place to be a leader or follower - being a leader is not always the "best" thing. Sometimes it is okay to step back and be quiet.

Ask what made the task hard and how they overcame the difficulty - you need to come up with creative solutions on a daily basis in life.
