Ice Breakers

Original Sources Unknown

Ice breakers are designed to ease some of the anxiety felt when a new group begins. It gives the participants an opportunity to learn a little about each other as well as gives them a chance to relax.

  1. Give the participant a spool of string. Tell them to "take as much as they will need". After they have all cut their string, instruct them to tell the group about themselves while winding the string around their finger. They may/must talk until the string is wrapped completely. All information the girls choose to tell about themselves must be positive.

  2. Have participants introduce each other. Name, favorite food, favorite TV show, favorite movie, etc.

  3. Have a scavenger hunt. The object is for the participants to find other group members whom have completed the items on the scavenger hunt list. The participants must interact with each other to complete this task. Remind them must have a variety of names on their list. Have the list include questions such as:

    Who has…
    Lived out of state?
    Attended a concert?
    Been on a vacation?
    Speaks a foreign language?
    Brothers or sisters?
    Been overseas?
    Participated in sports?
    Received an award?

When the lists are complete, have each participant read their answers.

  4. Match pairs. The object is for the participants to match "pairs". The facilitator will make a list of "famous pairs" and write each on an index card. Remember to only write one name on each card. The cards are passed out to participants and they must find their match. Examples of pairs:

    Milk / Cookies
    Hip / Hop
    Chips / Dip
    Lucy / Desi
    Peas / Carrots
    Cheech / Chong

Think of pairs that your group may relate to.

  5. Have the members introduce themselves and state what they would take on a trip to the moon. The next person in the group begins by repeating what the previous person said (She is _______ and she would take ________, I'm ____________ and I would take _________) Continue this throughout the group. Be aware that after a few people, it will be difficult to remember what the first girls said and their names. Allow the girls to help each other. Continue until all of the girls can name everyone and their item. (Note: depending on the size of the group and time, you may not be able to continue) This is designed to be a bit silly, to offer information about each girl, and to learn names,
