Ideas and Examples of Groups

Teen Central Girls Group

The court counselors in Cumberland County started a girls' group. The group meets weekly for 16 weeks for a one-hour session. The curriculum relates to issues, which are relevant to girls. Substance abuse, self-image, communication, health issues and self-esteem are all incorporated into the curriculum. The most important occurrence in this group is the relationship established between the girls and their court counselor. The counselors are able to address issues with the girls and see a side of the girls they normally wouldn't see. The girls get the opportunity to see the counselors as human beings with compassion whom they can trust. This is quite different from the image they begin with. The group discusses issues, sets rules, and solves problems. Initially the girls are reluctant. (What could possibly be good about something the court counselor recommends and also attends…) As the girls take ownership of their group, they look forward to attending.
