Tips for Creative Group Sessions

Rooms of Their Own Program
Samarkand Manor Youth Development Center

  • Plan your sessions. It is almost assured disaster to walk into a room of teenage girls with out a plan for the activity.

  • Have a backup plan. Sometimes what we think will be a great session bombs. Have a backup activity. Do not be afraid to say, "This activity isn't what I thought it would be - let's try."

  • Know your topic. If you are having a group session addressing health issues, be sure you have done your homework so you provide the appropriate, correct information.

  • Prepare for group. Have your materials set up and waiting for the girls.

  • Identify the issues being discussed. Chat sessions work well if they are guided and maintain focused.

  • Include a relaxation technique for an excellent opener for all group sessions.
