Always
stand up against racist behavior or comments. Do not stand by and
let people act or speak in ways that are demeaning to another individual
or culture. This goes for taunting and making fun of people. Do not
stand for it! It is up to you to stop people from making fun of other
people.
It's
time to take a stand against racist jokes! Tell your friends how
wrong they are for making racist jokes. Say something like, "That
joke isn't funny," or, "You shouldn't say things like that
-- it's wrong." Take the lead and treat everyone you meet with
respect.
Everyone
has biases or prejudices, whether we think we do or not. These preconceived
ideas affect the way we talk to and interact with people. Talk with
a friend or trusted adult about your racist feelings. Talk them through
so you can see them for what they really are.
It takes
more then one person to end racism. Think of ways you can fight
racism in your school or community. Get your friends together to help.
You can start by painting over racist graffiti and pledging never to
say another racist word -- ever!
Draw
or paint a big poster that tells others one way that they can make their
neighborhood more peaceful and harmonious. Remember, it should be
colorful and deliver a positive message. Hang the posters throughout
your school or community.
Take
a personal stand and make a pledge to end violence in your family and
in your local community! Write your pledge on a piece of paper and
put it on your wall, mirror, locker, etc., and encourage everyone you
know to sign it.
