Problem Solving Skills

www.search-institute.org

A youth leader must have the ability to solve problems in order to keep the process moving along. As you mature with your leadership ability, your problem-solving competency will become second nature. Problem solving will give you an appreciation of what your mom and dad go through on a daily basis.

Part of being a good problem solver is being a "trouble-shooter". This is looking for causes of potential problems. Sometimes you may have to acquire an extra sense for spotting these potential hot spots.

Suggested Problem Solving Process:

  • Identify the problem
  • Perception check (is this problem perceived by everyone?)
  • Brainstorm (ask people to come up with ideas on how to solve the problem)
  • Evaluate or analyze the ideas
  • Clarify
  • Prioritize
