| Getting Focused |
Many times
when we meet with a girl, it takes a few minutes to get focused. She
has a lot going on in her world and her thoughts may be anywhere but
where we need them to be. Take some time to get things focused.
- Allow
her to "vent". Let her "unload" in a controlled
environment. She may not be able to focus until she addresses what's
bothering her. Listen, even if it does not relate to what you had
in mind to discuss.
- Just
simply sit quietly for a few minutes.
- Listen
to music before you get started.
- Offer
the opportunity to use the restroom; get a Coke, etc. to avoid distractions
and interruptions later.
- If in
a group, give them a few minutes to chat. This will help the group
get focused when you need them to and cut down on side conversations.
If you are working one on one, give her time to simply tell you about
her day, her new boyfriend, or her fight with her best friend, etc.
- Review
what you talked about last time you met. (Review your records before
she arrives and then remind her of the previous meetings topics and
concerns.)
- Read
a poem aloud.
- Talk
about the weather, current events, and new clothes - anything to get
the conversation flowing.
Read some affirmations or inspirational quotes.
- Use
guided imagery.
