Simple Tips for Establishing Rapport
and Building Relationships
  • Don't judge. She'll feel it, know it, and hate you for it.

  • Talk. We are not suggesting you reveal your deepest secret, simply talk about something you have in common. Ask questions to find out what she likes that you have a similar interest in.

  • Don't jump into issues as soon as she walks in the door. Give both of you time to feel comfortable around each other.

  • Give her your undivided attention. Allow the machine to pick up your calls, put a note on your door to avoid distractions.

  • Get yourself centered and focused. If you are having a horrible day, take a few minutes before you meet with her to get yourself calmed down and ready to focus on her.

  • Plan your time together. Have a plan regarding what you are going to talk about and what issues you are addressing.

  • If you are planning on an activity, prepare for it before she (or the group) arrives. It is frustrating for everybody to have to rush or wait for something.

  • Be respectful. Remember - you are establishing rapport and building trust. Respect her feelings, emotions, and opinions. They are hers, and even if you don't agree with them, you need to show her respect.

  • When possible and appropriate, keep it light. More than likely, the subjects and issues you are addressing are serious. When appropriate, lighten things up a bit. Humor is always a great way to relax others. Just keep it appropriate.

  • Be genuine. If it's sad, express sadness. If it's funny, laugh.
