Movement In Pairs

Girls Circle
www.girlscircle.com

The objective of this activity is to enhance understanding of healthy relationships.

Explain to the girls that being in a relationship requires the ability to express many things such a: our feelings, ideas, opinions, and desires. Healthy relationships usually include a balance of give and take from each person. The girls will experience the give and take of a relationship by using their bodies to communicate non - verbally.

  1. Begin playing instrumental music.

  2. Assign girls into pairs, and have them stand back to back. Tell them to make their way to the floor together. (They will be sitting back to back).

  3. With their eyes closed, tell them that you will tap one of each pair on her shoulder, and she will be the lead girl. Instruct that girl that there will be no talking during this exercise.

  4. Have the lead girl express something non-verbally through movement to her partner, i.e. a feeling, an energy, a mood, a story, etc. (This may simply involve back movement.) The partner's job is to listen with her body.

  5. Then, have them switch roles, so that the "lead girl" now listens to her partner, who takes turn expressing something.

  6. Have the first (lead) girl "give" something through movement to her partner, who is to "receive" this gift. Again, switch so that the second girl "gives" something to the first, who "receives" the gift.

  7. Tell them to continue to simply relate through the movement, communicating to one another as they please.

  8. After appropriate time, allow the girls to share what the experience was like for them.
