Gardening

Denise Chrisman

The objective of this activity is to spend time together peacefully while learning about patience, responsibility, and relaxation.

This activity also provides an excellent opportunity to expose girls to science. Gardening is a wonderful way to introduce biology in a practical, fun manner.

Plant a garden. This does not have to be done outside in a big yard. Container gardens work wonderful if space is limited or the garden must be inside. There is much to be learned from gardening. She will learn that it requires attention and commitment, and that attention and commitment pay off. She may learn to relax when she's gardening - if she likes it. Something she'll be able to use during stressful times in the future. Offer her information about how plants grow and what elements must be present. Encourage her to learn about the plants or flowers she is growing from the Internet or from books.
