The
objective of this activity is to offer an opportunity to communicate
about uncomfortable or sensitive topics in a comfortable manner. This
activity allows information to be shared with a girl even she is too
uncomfortable to discuss the subject face to face.
A shared
journal is a journal shared with others. The journal may be shared between
a mother and daughter, father and daughter, a group, or a girl and a
service provider.
Many times
girls may feel uncomfortable talking about a subject. If it is difficult
for her to verbally discuss a topic, she may feel more at ease writing
about her questions or concerns. The recipient of the journal can then
reply in writing to the question or concern. This approach may provide
a non - threatening opportunity to discuss sensitive topics and allow
the service providers to pass along correct and helpful information
to the girls with whom they work. It is also suggested that the recipient
make the girls aware they are willing to discuss the topic verbally
if she chooses or when she is ready.
This approach
to communication also provides an excellent opportunity to compliment
the girls. With each entry remind her of one of her many strengths.
