“I never knew that women were such an important part of our history,” stated one of the young ladies attending Samarkand’s Women’s History Month celebration.  The program was held in recognition of Women’s History Month and was complete with a guest speaker, songs, and theatrical performances.  This was the culmination of a month long educational experience for the students where they learned about the extraordinary impact women have had on our history.

The guest speaker for the event was Dr. Fred McQueen Jr., MD.  He gave a motivational speech about empowerment. He informed the students and staff of how they have the ability to make their own decisions about their lives and their situations.  Dr. McQueen is a 1973 graduate of Howard University Medical College. He completed his medical internship in Washington, D.C. at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Currently, he is the chief of staff of the Sandhills Regional Medical Center, a post that he has held intermittently since 1978.

Samarkand students, dressed in historical costumes, followed the guest speaker with theatrical performances of readings of several women in history. One of the student’s performances included a reading of a modified poem by Maya Angelou. Closing remarks were made by Mrs. Martha McMillan, the facility’s assistant exceptional children’s teacher.

Governor Easley has proclaimed March 2008 as “Women’s History Month” in North Carolina.  To see Governor’s Easley’s proclamation and read more about Women’s History Month, please visit the following link.
