Hats Off to the Raging Rams

“I will take Winners for $200, Alex.”  “And the clue is, the Raging Rams from Dobbs Youth Development Center……. If you answered; what is the team that took first place at this year’s Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board, Inc.’s Quiz Bowl, “you are correct!”

On Saturday, May 10, 2008, students from Dobbs’ Workforce Investment Act (WIA) In-School Youth program participated in the 4th Annual Quiz Bowl held in New Bern, NC, at Craven Community College.  Competing against teams from Craven County Schools, Carteret County Schools, Greene County (Greene Lamp Inc.), and two teams formed by members of Executive Board of the Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board, Inc., youth council students from Dobbs were able to take home the first place trophy.

Questions for the competition come from such categories as: history, civics, economics, science, chemistry, Spanish, math and current events.  The Raging Rams missed only two questions that were asked, but had the opportunity to steal ten additional questions and answered all of them correctly.  The team members included five students in the WIA program at Dobbs.  Each participant received their own 1st place trophy and a seventy-five dollar gift card.  Many of the students gave the gift cards to their moms for Mother’s Day.

This is the fourth year that the Quiz Bowl has been held.  Each year the Raging Rams have placed in the top three, and this is the second year where they have taken the top honor.  Ms. Patrice Hunt, WIA Career Consultant, serves as the advisor to these young men and accompanied them to the competition along with Mr. Andre Whitfield a eacher at Dobbs Youth Development Center.  Mrs. Hunt stated, “It was a magic moment for these young men.”
